San Andrés Huayapam, whose name comes from the Nahuatl <hueyatl: sea> and <pan: sobre> “over the sea”; It is one of the 570 municipalities that make up the state of Oaxaca.
This community is located 20 minutes away from the city of Oaxaca de Juárez and, as we detailed in our previous blog, it is known worldwide for preserving in its gastronomy an ancient drink: tejate or the drink of the gods.
One of the attractions it has is the Huayapam Ecotourism Park, which was initially created to generate jobs among the inhabitants of this community. In addition, this place is ideal for the whole family, thanks to the various amenities that make it up, such as: 5 km cycle path, bicycle rental, zip line, hiking activities, palapas, grills, restaurants, outdoor gym, swimming pool , camping area and an incredible view of the El Estudiante Dam.
The cost of access is 10 Mexican pesos, but if you attend the restaurant, access becomes completely free. It is important to mention that it is not advisable to swim in the dam since the sediment is muddy, which makes it very dangerous.
From the moment you enter this town, you can see its traditional and beautiful streets created with river stones, as well as its adobe houses surrounded by reed fences that house large cocoa rose trees (main ingredient of the tejate).
Regarding its gastronomy, Huayapam is famous for preparing the ancestral drink called “tejate” or “drink of the gods.” It is common that when walking through the streets you can see the cooks in the houses preparing tejate to sell it. One of the typical dishes sold in Huayapam are chichilo, rajas, mole, chepil and bean tamales, in addition to the typical yellow mole, green and quesillo empanadas.
There is no doubt that each corner of Oaxaca is unique and is full of cultural, culinary and natural wealth that has managed to prevail over time. Oaxaca is a destination that cannot go unnoticed on the list of those who want to know the authentic essence of Mexico as it is a State that promises an unforgettable experience.
