The town of Tlalixtac de Cabrera is located in the state of Oaxaca, just 22 minutes from the capital: Oaxaca de Juárez. It was founded around the 12th century by the Zapotecs, making it one of the oldest towns in the Valley of Oaxaca. Its name means “on the white land” and comes from tlalli -“land”- and iztac -“white”-.

This place is the birthplace of the famous painter Miguel Cabrera, who is the greatest exponent of New Spain viceregal painting. One of Miguel Cabrera’s most famous works is a portrait he made of Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz. His work is present in many private and public collections in different parts of the world such as Spain and the United States.

Like every town, Tlalixtac has traditions and customs deeply rooted in its community, such as: the Day of the Dead, the celebration of Holy Week, the patron saint’s day in honor of San Francisco de Asís and the typical festival of “La Guelaguetza”, a festival that is celebrated in the month of July throughout the state of Oaxaca.

Another very important tradition in the community is the artisanal production of textiles, specifically shawls. Rebozos are long, narrow pieces of cloth that are used to cover the head or shoulders and are a very popular accessory throughout the country. In Tlalixtac, women make shawls with colorful and unique designs, using ancestral techniques that have been passed down from generation to generation.

As for gastronomy, it is made up of delicious typical Oaxacan dishes such as mole, tlayudas, quesillo, stuffed chiles and horchata water. In Tlalixtac you can find a large number of restaurants with typical food of the State.
